Downtown Eastside Neighbourhood Council Raises Concerns About Recent
Pedestrian Deaths

(Vancouver) The Downtown Eastside Neighbourhood Council (DNC) is
calling on Vancouver Police to step-up speed enforcement in the
Downtown Eastside after three pedestrians were killed in the past few
weeks.

“We’re pleased the city implemented a 30 kilometer zone along the
Hastings corridor but they must enforce it,” commented Richard
Cunningham, Co-President of the DNC. ” We also call on city officials
to carefully monitor traffic volumes and speed on other east-west
corridors now that Powell is closed.”

Recently, Powell Street was closed for construction and has likely
resulted in  heavier traffic on Hastings and Cordova – the two streets
where pedestrians were killed.

Several years ago, in response to the pedestrian safety initiative of
VANDU, the city created a 30 kilometer zone along Hastings for several
blocks on both sides of Main street.
